More thread count isn't always better. The best sheet for you depends on fiber quality, weave, and how you sleep — not just a bigger number on the label.
What thread count actually measures
Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric, counting both horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads. A 300 thread count sheet has 300 threads per square inch. Simple enough — but the story doesn't end there.
Manufacturers can inflate thread counts by twisting multiple thin, lower-quality yarns together and counting each strand separately. A sheet marketed as "1000 thread count" may actually feel rougher than a well-made 300 thread count sheet using long-staple cotton. Quality of fiber matters more than quantity — and for 20 years, we've been weaving for luxury hotels where that distinction is everything.
Our thread count range
Dove & Thread sheets come in four thread counts because different weaves suit different needs. Here's what each option feels like and who it's best for:
| Thread Count | Feel | Best For | Breathability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 210 TC | Crisp, cool, hotel-style percale | Hot sleepers, summer, the Sun Belt | Excellent |
| 300 TC | Smooth with a soft hand | All-round comfort, year-round use | Very good |
| 450 TC | Noticeably soft and refined | Those who want a premium, luxurious feel | Good |
| 600 TC | Dense, smooth, substantial | Cooler months, New England, the Pacific Northwest | Moderate |
Your climate matters more than you think
In the American South — Texas, Florida, Georgia, Arizona — summer nights can stay above 75°F for weeks. A heavy 600 TC sheet will trap heat you don't want. Reach for 210 or 300 TC in a percale weave; the looser structure breathes and stays cool against the skin.
In the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and Pacific Northwest, cooler nights reward a denser weave. A 450 or 600 TC sheet in a sateen finish feels substantial and cocooning through a Chicago or Vermont winter. Many of our customers keep two sets rotating — a lighter 210/300 for summer, and a heavier 450/600 for the colder months.
For readers in Australia, the same logic applies in reverse seasons. Sydney and Brisbane favor 210–300 TC year-round; Melbourne and Hobart benefit from 450–600 TC in winter.
If you're not sure where to start, choose 300 TC. It's the sweet spot between crispness and softness, and suits most homes year-round regardless of climate.
Percale vs sateen: the other half of the story
Thread count only tells you how dense the weave is. The weave pattern — percale or sateen — determines how the sheet actually feels.
Percale
A one-over, one-under weave. Crisp, matte, and cool to the touch, like a freshly laundered dress shirt. Percale gets softer with every wash but keeps its structure. This is what hotels reach for in warmer climates and what we use in our 210 TC sheets. We build them with a 40's single-pick yarn at 110 ends per inch by 90 picks per inch, then finish them with singeing and calendering to eliminate stray fibers and produce that signature smooth, flat surface.
Sateen
A four-over, one-under weave. Smooth, slightly lustrous, with a silk-like hand. Sateen drapes beautifully and feels warmer against the skin. Best for cooler nights and those who love a luxurious, refined feel. We'll cover the weave craft itself in depth in our Percale vs Sateen guide.
Fiber quality beats fiber quantity
A 300 TC sheet made from long-staple cotton will outlast and outperform a 1000 TC sheet made from short, coarse fibers. Long-staple cotton has longer individual fibers, which means fewer exposed ends, a smoother surface, and better durability over time. When you shop for sheets, ask about the fiber — not just the count. (We explain this in detail in our Long-Staple Cotton guide.)
The Dove & Thread approach
We use long-staple cotton across the entire range and everything is OEKO-TEX® certified. Whether you choose 210 TC for everyday crispness or 600 TC for a statement bed, you're getting the same care in sourcing and weaving. The number just tells you the feel — the quality stays consistent.
