Bamboo and eucalyptus sheets are everywhere now, wrapped in green packaging and words like “natural,” “sustainable,” and “plant-based.” Some of that is fair. A lot of it glosses over what these fabrics actually are and how they are made. Here is the fuller picture, so you can decide with your eyes open.
What bamboo sheets actually are
This is the part the marketing rarely mentions: almost all “bamboo” sheets are not woven from bamboo fibre at all. They are rayon (viscose) made from bamboo. The bamboo plant is dissolved in a strong chemical solution, pushed through spinnerets to form fibres, and regenerated into a soft yarn. The end product is chemically manufactured — closer to a semi-synthetic than to a natural fibre you would recognise.
That is why regulators in several countries require these products to be labelled “rayon made from bamboo” rather than simply “bamboo.” The plant is the raw material; the sheet is a processed fibre.
Eucalyptus, Tencel and lyocell
Eucalyptus sheets are usually lyocell (often sold under the Tencel brand). Lyocell is made in a broadly similar way — wood pulp dissolved and regenerated into fibre — but in a more modern closed-loop process that recycles most of its solvent. That makes lyocell genuinely cleaner to produce than conventional bamboo rayon, and it is a real improvement. It is still, however, a manufactured fibre, not a natural one straight off the plant.
The “natural” question
Cotton is different in kind. It is a fibre that grows on the plant and is spun into yarn — no dissolving, no regenerating, no chemical reconstitution. When a cotton sheet says 100% cotton, the thing against your skin is the plant fibre itself. That is the honest meaning of “natural,” and it is worth being precise about.
How they feel and perform
Bamboo rayon and lyocell are genuinely soft and have a cool, silky hand that many people love at first touch. The trade-offs show up over time:
- Durability — regenerated fibres are generally weaker than cotton, especially when wet, so they can wear and thin faster
- Pilling — softer regenerated fibres are more prone to pilling with washing and friction
- Care — they are fussier to launder, often needing gentle cycles and low heat to avoid damage
- Longevity — a good cotton set typically outlasts them by years

Regenerated fibres win on day-one silkiness. But a well-finished long-staple cotton is soft too — and it is still strong, breathable, and intact years later, when the softer fabric has thinned or pilled.
The sustainability reality
Bamboo grows fast, which sounds green — but conventional bamboo rayon processing uses harsh chemicals and a great deal of water and energy, and much of it is not closed-loop. Lyocell is better on this front. Cotton has its own footprint too, particularly water use. The honest summary is that no fibre is perfect, and “made from a plant” does not automatically mean low-impact once you account for how it is turned into fabric. What matters as much as the raw material is how long the product lasts — a sheet you replace every year is rarely the sustainable choice, whatever it is made of.
